WARNING!
This entire site is insanely out of date! It's been years since I've touched it, and you can tell because everything is about Darwin 6.0.2, while the current version is 9! The only reason it's still here is because Google keeps sending people to it because it's linked to from Apple's Darwin-x86 mailing list.
You'd probably have more fun getting an Intel Mac and using Darwin that way.
Darwin/x86 6.0.2
Version 6.0.2 is the latest available full binary release of the Darwin operating system from Apple Computer, Inc.
Apple released Darwin/x86 version 6.0.2 about two months after the initial release of 6.0.2 for PPC (the primary development platform and base for MacOS X). While the new release does include support for a vastly larger amount of hardware than the previous release (1.4.1 - version numbering explaination here), many components of this release are broken, and some are not available in source format. The intent of this site is to help users who are new to Darwin/x86 or merely upgrading from 1.4.1 to get Darwin/x86 6.0.2 into a comfortable working state.
What to ExpectFrom this site, you can expect to:
- Find information on getting the core components in Darwin/x86 6.0.2 up and running at least as well as it runs on PPC. It'd be a good idea to start here if you don't already have Darwin/x86 6.0.2, or here if you do.
- Get a useful window/desktop manager up and running (either via source or binary packages). Current choices include
- KDE 3.1
- GNOME (I think. I'll need to look into this. For now, it's not supported)
- WindowMaker
- Get a web browser. Current choices include:
- Links (console and X version)
- Dillo
- Mozilla
Those are the essentials. After that, there's a whole list of software available from darwinports or on this site.
